Basalt rock dancing.

Today I took a day trip to Rangitoto, which is one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf, just off Auckland. You can get there by ferry.

Rangitoto is a volcanic island, which has only been around for about 700 years. The name mean Blood Red Sky (I wonder how that came about, eh, boys and girls?)

Took something called the "Volcanic Experience", which was a trundling tractor pulling a series of canopied seats, around and up the island. Then we got out and walked up to the crater rim (I've stood on the rim of a fucking volcano!!) and then up again to the summit, where there was a 360 degree view of the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland.

Fucking awesome (in the truest meaning of the word).

Comments:
that sounds so fuckin' cool!

any photos?

I, too, hope you took lots and lots of photos of the volcano (and everything elst). Was it bubbling? hissing? smoking? Ah, the wonderland that is Enz. You are rapidly becoming the goddess of tourists, at least for us dully sitting in Oz at our computers. What a shame slides have gone out of favour - I always quite enjoyed slide nights, despite the many jokes made about them. Perhaps a blogspot slide show of the best?

Good goddess you are jaunting about!

From Hobbiton to Mount Doom in just a few days. Impressive! As Parental One said - we are all very very jealous of you. But have you met the Maori lad you're gonna stuff in your suitcase and bring home yet? And his gay brother for yours truly.

The Pods say Meeeeoooowwww.

So ... what next? After a Volcano Experience I dare say some extreme sports are in the offing! Naked bungee jumping anyone?

Re photos - As I am using that strange and outmoded form of phototaking (ie fillum) I'll have to wait until I get home and print them and scan them and make a pretty page of them with pithy comments for y'all to see them. There will be a fuckload to choose from, that's all I can say.

Additional - Rangitoto is not an active volcano, so the crater was covered in vegetation and there was no bubbling hissing or other exciting activity. More's the pity. But absolutely terrifying and beautiful anyway.
